#transit
China has extended its 144-hour visa-free transit policy to three new ports, totalling 37 eligible ports. The new ports are Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, Lijiang Sanyi International Airport, and the Mohan railway port.
This policy allows citizens from 54 countries to transit visa-free for up to 144 hours for tourism, business, or family visits. The National Immigration Administration (NIA) plans to further optimize this policy to enhance international cooperation and development.
In the first half of 2024, China welcomed 14.64 million visitors, a 153% increase from the previous year, with visa-free entries making up 52% of the total.

Protecting Your Phone and Data Privacy at the US Border
United States
#immigration
US border agents can search your phone. You can refuse, but they may confiscate it. Experts suggest assessing your risk before travel. Use a strong password and disable Face ID.
Encrypt your data and avoid full phone wipes, as they may seem suspicious. Instead, selectively delete sensitive files and apps. Store important data on cloud services, as CBP cannot access them.
Turning your phone off before entering the US increases security. If your phone is taken, request a receipt. Compliance can speed up entry, but refusal may delay you. Weigh your options carefully and prepare in advance.

Finland Introduces Automated Residence Permit Extensions for Researchers
Finland
#residence
#extension
Finland now allows researchers to extend residence permits automatically. The system approves applications if specific criteria are met. Eligible applicants include researchers with a job in a Finnish research organization and those not in an EU mobility program.
Applications submitted online from March 19, 2025, also qualify. However, permits won't be auto-approved for those applying with family, under protection orders, or facing deportation.
If the applicant is not eligible, a specialist reviews the application. This change aims to retain researchers as Finland receives fewer work permit applications, raising concerns about labor shortages and the economic slowdown.

Canada Updates US Travel Guidance, Adds 30-Day Registration Rule
Canada
#travel
#policy
Canada updated its US travel guidance, requiring visitors staying over 30 days to register. The rule applies to all foreign nationals and takes effect on April 11. Non-compliance could lead to fines or prosecution.
The requirement stems from a Trump-era executive order enforcing the Immigration and Nationality Act. Canadians usually do not need fingerprints. However, the rule has not been consistently applied.
Recent updates come amid US-Canada tensions over trade and politics. Other countries like the UK and Germany have also warned travelers after detentions. The guidance directs travelers to the USCIS website for registration details.
