Lithuania Introduces Stricter Residence Permit Rules for Foreigners Starting December 2024
Lithuania
#residence
#policy
From December 1, 2024, Lithuania will tighten residence permit rules, limiting applications to citizens from countries with designated external service providers. This change aims to enhance national security and control immigration.
Foreigners from nations without such service offices, like Lebanon and Sri Lanka, will be impacted directly. However, certain applicants, including those seeking family reunification, highly skilled positions, or study opportunities, may apply in alternative locations.
The service office in Nepal will remain operational until December 31 for applications submitted before September. Citizens from select countries, including India and the U.S., will not face changes to the existing process.

Hong Kong May Extend Border Hours for Rising Overnight Traffic

Hong Kong’s Director of Immigration, Benson Kwok, announced possible extensions of border checkpoint hours to handle increasing overnight traffic. After the pandemic, border crossings have surged, reaching near pre-Covid levels, with 1.2 million trips recorded on August 25.
Kwok stated that extending hours would require coordination with other departments and mainland China. Meanwhile, he noted 23,000 individuals were denied entry this year, mostly for “suspicious intentions” like illegal work or document fraud.
This included AP photojournalist Louise Delmotte, whose visa extension was denied. City leader John Lee emphasized that entry decisions should align with Hong Kong’s immigration policies and laws.

How Trump-Era Immigration Policies Could Have Impacted Elon Musk's Early Career
United States
#immigration
#policy
Elon Musk's immigration journey could have been jeopardized under Trump-era policies, as he initially worked in the U.S. without proper authorization. During his early years in the U.S., Musk violated the terms of his J-1 student visa.
Trump’s administration, however, proposed stricter enforcement against foreign students overstaying visas, a policy halted by a federal court. The 1996 immigration law introduced bans for unlawful stays, which could have affected Musk.
He later secured an H-1B visa, yet recent immigration changes continue to scrutinize visa violators. Experts suggest that Musk’s early status could potentially impact his security clearance as CEO of SpaceX.

Canada’s Slow Visa Processing Leaves Gazans Stranded in Egypt Amid War
Canada

Canada's visa program for Gazans is progressing slowly, causing extended separations and hardships for applicants. Reem Alyazouri, a refugee, reached Toronto, but her parents remain in Cairo, awaiting Canadian visas.
Canada had pledged to welcome 5,000 Gazans, yet only 300 out of over 4,200 applicants have arrived. Immigration officials cite limited control over Gaza exit permissions and complex file requirements.
Applicants in Egypt lack work rights, healthcare, and basic services, further complicating their situations. Advocates say this program is slower than similar initiatives for Ukrainians and Syrian earthquake survivors, while those waiting face continued uncertainty and distress.
