In 2024, Sweden is set to experience net emigration for the first time in over 50 years. The Swedish Migration Agency forecasts that more people will leave the country than arrive, marking a significant shift. From January to May, 5,700 more people emigrated than immigrated.

Immigration fell by 15%, while emigration rose by 60% compared to the same period in 2023. The number of asylum applications also reached a historically low level. The Swedish government views this trend as essential for improving integration and reducing social exclusion.

France to Propose Stricter Immigration Law for 2025, Extending Detention Limits

France

#policy

The French government plans to introduce a new immigration law by 2025, which could extend the detention period for undocumented migrants from 90 to 210 days. This move, defended by Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, aims to address evolving security challenges.

The law may also tighten regularization rules for undocumented migrants, particularly in family cases. Despite potential opposition in Parliament, the government seeks broad consensus without relying on the far-right National Rally.

The last immigration bill passed in 2024 caused divisions within President Macron’s coalition and led to Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau's resignation.

Kosovo Citizens with Serbian Passports Granted Visa-Free Travel to EU

Serbia

Kosovo citizens holding Serbian Coordination Directorate passports can now travel visa-free to Schengen Zone countries for short-term stays. The decision took effect on October 13, 2024, following an agreement signed on September 18 by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and Hungary’s Minister for European Affairs, János Bóka.

This visa liberalization aligns all Western Balkan countries under the same visa rules. Previously, these specific Serbian passport holders, primarily residing in Kosovo, were excluded from visa-free travel. The regulation, published in the EU's Official Gazette, addresses this exclusion, allowing broader visa-free access to the Schengen Area.
