United States

Allies of Donald Trump are planning strict measures to curb illegal immigration if he is re-elected. According to a Wall Street Journal report, these measures include deporting asylum seekers to other countries.
Trump criticizes President Biden's handling of border crossings and promises tougher policies. Some of Trump's previous immigration measures were overturned by courts, indicating challenges for future policies.
The Biden administration faces record illegal immigration and has proposed quick expulsions for some undocumented migrants. Biden is working with Mexican authorities to curb crossings, while Trump's policies increase pressure on Biden to engage voters, especially in key demographics.
Estonia's 2024 immigration quota for temporary residence permits remains unfilled, with around 300 permits unclaimed out of the 1,300 allocated.
The Ministry of Interior attributes the drop in demand to the country's economic and security situation. The quota was filled from 2016 to 2019, but recent years have seen a decline. In response, the Ministry has proposed lowering the 2025 quota.
Despite this, the Economy Minister suggests increasing quotas for foreign workers to boost the economy. However, the Minister of Interior and other officials oppose this proposal, citing concerns over labor market impacts.
Germany has tightened its border control rules in response to increasing migration driven by global conflicts. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that the country faces heightened risks due to the surge in migrant flows.
To address these concerns, Germany has enforced stricter measures at its borders. However, Scholz highlighted plans to ease visa regulations for IT specialists and skilled migrants.
The goal is to simplify the visa process and modernize the country's legal and bureaucratic systems to attract more experienced workers, helping to support Germany’s growing need for talent in key sectors.

Finland Introduces Stricter Citizenship Rules, Extending Residency Requirement
Finland

#policy
Finland has revised its Citizenship Act, increasing the residency requirement for immigrants from 5 to 8 years, effective October 1, 2024. The requirement for applicants with strong language skills remains five years.
Time spent without a residence permit, including asylum processing, will no longer count toward residency. The new rules also simplify counting days spent abroad, allowing a maximum of 365 days abroad as part of the residency period.
Approximately 28,000 citizenship applications are pending, and Finland aims to clear the backlog by 2027. The Finnish Immigration Service expects the number of applications to rise under the revised law.
