US Increases Visa Costs for Musicians and DJs

United States

#visafee

Application fees for O and P visas, allowing musicians and DJs to perform in the US, will rise from April 1st. O visa costs will increase to $1,055, and P visas to $1,015—less than previously proposed. Small employers must pay an additional Asylum Program Fee of $300 or $600 for larger employers.

Expedited processing fees will also rise to $2,805 per application. The changes aim to cover business costs and prevent future backlogs. This marks the first increase in artist visa fees since 2016, announced by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Finland to Host EU Summit on Defense and Immigration Challenges

Finland

#immigration

Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will host key EU leaders in Saariselka on December 21-22 for talks on security and immigration. Attendees include EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and prime ministers from Sweden, Italy, and Greece.

The discussions will address Europe's security, defense, migration, and border challenges in a tense geopolitical climate. Finland recently accused Russia of orchestrating a migrant surge at its border, calling it a "hybrid attack," though Moscow denies the claim.

Orpo emphasized Europe's need for stronger leadership in the EU and NATO to counter threats from Russia, which he says seeks to divide Europe.

Canada’s Immigration Cap Hurts Foreign Student Enrollment and Colleges

Canada

#studentvisa

#immigration

Canada’s new immigration cap, addressing housing and job market pressures, has caused a 47% drop in foreign student enrollment. The policy, limiting student visas and reducing temporary worker programs, has heavily impacted Ontario’s colleges, leading to suspensions and job cuts.

Private colleges, like Ace Acumen, have seen zero new enrollments. Experts warn the policy could worsen labor shortages and hurt economic output. While Immigration Minister Marc Miller defends the plan, critics argue it harms Canada’s reputation as a top destination for international students. Colleges face significant revenue losses, and many institutions are struggling to adapt.

EU Grants Full Schengen Membership to Bulgaria and Romania

Bulgaria Romania

#schengen

The European Union has approved Bulgaria and Romania to join the Schengen membership program starting next year. This marks the end of a 13-year wait for the two countries, which Austria previously blocked due to concerns over undocumented immigration.

Romania's President Klaus Iohannis called it necessary, highlighting benefits like reduced border wait times and increased foreign investment. Austria lifted its veto after the countries signed a border protection agreement.

The Schengen zone now includes 29 members, offering over 400 million people free movement. This decision also coincides with growing support in the UK for rejoining free movement within the EU.
