Established in the Capital of Turkey, Ankara University is the first-ever higher education institute in the Turkish Republic. It was founded in 1946, 23 years after the foundation of the Republic. The University is in English medium and offers degrees in 120 undergraduate and 110 graduate programs to both national and international students. The University has produced various politicians, members of parliament and intellectuals over time.

The University follows the mission to contribute to advancement in modern technologies and science to follow these daily developments and to reflect on Turkey's higher education, development dynamics, social life, and product provision processes.
It has 41 research, education and application centres. ATAUM (Ankara University European Research Center) is an interdisciplinary training and research. It was founded in 1987 to promote understanding and knowledge of the European Union, Turkey-EU relations and EU member states. Other prominent centres are AU-BRC (Brain Research Centers), TÖMER (Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Center) and the Center of Environmental Sciences.
The students at Ankara University hail from all over the world. There are about 70,000 students at Bilkent, including about 4,000 international students.
International Student Office at Ankara University provides consultancy to international students from applying to graduation. This office facilitates all international students from undergraduate, exchange and PhD levels. Office also acts as a bridge between exchange students' home institutes and Ankara University. Established in 2009, this office operates under the University Rectorate.
The Sports Branch of Ankara Üniversitesi organizes several sports events to maintain and improve students' mental and physical health. Traditional sports events are held every year with the participation of around 2000 students. The sports competition are organized between vocational school teams and faculty teams in volleyball, basketball, handball, football, table tennis, badminton and wrestling. Sports teams of Ankara University also participate and represent in the tournaments and leagues organized by the Federation of Turkey University Sports.
The Ankara University offers dormitories for both national and international students. These dormitories vary in size and the number of students in them. They offer basic facilities including high-speed internet and furniture to the students residing here. Hostels Institution (KYK) and Higher Education Credit is the main department responsible for providing student housing services.
As for private residences, you can find several of them near campus. These residences can be a bit expensive but are worth staying there.
