Brown University is a private research institute in Providence, Rhode Island. Created in 1764 as the College in the English Colony of Providence Plantations and Rhode Island. Brown is the 7th oldest higher education institute in the United States. Also, it is one of those nine colonial colleges which were chartered before the American Revolution. Admission is among the most selective in the United States. In 2021, the university reported a first-year acceptance rate of 5.4%. This university comprises the College, Alpert Medical School, Graduate School, School of Public Health, School of Engineering, and the School of Professional Studies.

These students live with roommates in supportive residential hall communities of 50 to 60 students. Returning students choose from housing assignments, which range from apartments to private single rooms to suites for groups and friends, through a lottery system.
