Caltech, known as the California Institute of Technology, was established in 1891 as Throop University. It was given its current name in 1920. The school, which focuses on science and engineering, is situated in Pasadena, California, about 11 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The Association of American Universities, the forerunner of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, elected Caltech to membership in 1934. Caltech is regarded as one of the world's top academic institutions.

In a Pomona College study from 2015, Caltech was ranked first in the nation for the proportion of its graduates who go on to acquire a PhD.
