Established in 1989, this university is named after a British explorer named  Captain Napier Strut. Being a multi-campus public institute, it is based in the main cities of Australia. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and higher degrees by single subject and research study. Charles Strut has several partnerships with TAFE institutions across the country, giving students an opportunity in various exchange programs.

Three faculties are Arts and Education, Business, Justice and Behavioral Sciences and Faculty of Science and Health.

It conducts research across many areas, including veterinary sciences, agriculture, environmental and chemical sciences, ethics and philosophy, and education. Charles Sturt University works collaboratively on many research projects with governments and its Cooperative Research Centers (CRCs). It is involved with 4 CRCs: High-Performance Soils, Food and Agility, National Marine Bioproducts and Cyber Security Research Centre. These centres are federal government initiatives to improve sustainability and competitiveness and solve industry problems.

Students

The university has over 45,000 students enrolled. This means international students can get an Australian CSU degree while staying in their home country. By studying in a supportive Australian regional area, some international students could be eligible for extended post-study employment or education rights. The university also has options to get online education from the comfort of their own country.

Charles Sturt University Student Senate is the main representative of the student at the university. This senate runs various programs to facilitate the students and provide opportunities for students to grow academically and socially. Charles Sturt Mentoring Program is one of the prominent initiatives of the student senate, which aims to give guidance and support to students for learning and professional development.

Accommodation

The university has a variety of accommodation options if students want to live and study on campus. Live and learn on campus during a residential school stay. There are accommodation options for residential school students on all of CSU's campuses, but in some locations like Port Macquarie, Albury and Dubbo, spaces are limited.
