About

Hokkaido University is a prominent comprehensive institute that places prominence on its graduate schools. The university was established in 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College, the first advanced academic institution in Japan. Throughout its long history, the institute was promoted to an Imperial University and thrived after forming the new university system. Today it has 12 faculties, 26 research centres and 19 graduate schools.

The university has two campuses in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of the country’s 4 main islands. These two campuses are established with the goal of practical learning. Here, the university has several facilities such as botanical gardens, training ships, 650 square kilometre experimental forest and many experimental farms on and off campus. Hokkaido University has been developing an international network; the university has opened offices in Seoul, Beijing, Lusaka, and Helsinki for international collaborations and exchange programs.

The mission of the university is to pursue research and education and to build a relationship with society under the basic philosophy of Global Perspectives, Frontier Spirit, Practical Learning and All-round Education. Firstly, the idea of Global Perspectives means that the faculties and students must broaden their minds to diverse worlds. Secondly, Frontier Spirit represents the idea that faculty and students at the institute must take on problems of the age in a new way and bravely pave. Thirdly, Practical Learning means that the university must share the research results with the community through practical utilization and application of the research. Finally, All-round Education means cultivating people with rich cultural knowledge and excellent intelligence, humanity, and expert knowledge.

Students

There are more than 18,000 students enrolled, including 2,135 international students from 100 countries/regions.

At Hokkaido University, there are over 250 societies and clubs, and students can take part in sporting activities, attend festivals on campus, visit the university’s museum, or relax with friends in one eatery. Here students get a wide range of sports facilities to keep them healthy and fit. The sports facility at Hokkaido University has gymnasiums, indoor athletic fields, martial arts training halls, and a swimming pool.

Residential Life is an integral phase of the university experience. The housing available at Hokkaido University is one of the many benefits of studying here. There is a great number and variety of living spaces available. It has a total of 795 rooms, which are fully furnished and equipped and are within walking distance of the campus.
