Istanbul Technical University


Established in 1773 during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Mustafa III, Istanbul Technical University is among the renowned educational institutes of Turkey. It constitutes 14 faculties and offers studies in 99 Undergraduate and 192 graduate programs. Apart from that, the University also holds the title of being the third-oldest University worldwide. Although the University is known for its work in Engineering and Technology, it has recently started programs in Social Sciences.

With more than 240 years of history, Istanbul Technical University provides education in a modern academic atmosphere and strong staff within an intensely competitive environment. ITU has adopted a dynamic, creative, high quality and communicative approach to research and intellectual development. The University aims to rank among leading institutions globally and is dedicated to advancing applied and basic sciences. Students here have developed the quality to make and support the leading and creative faculty to accomplish goals and conduct research to contribute to technology and science globally. Graduates of this University possess the ability to compete on the international and national level and have leadership and entrepreneurship qualities.


The University is considered a guiding star for about 24,000 students. These students also include around 4,000 international students. The alumni list of the institute is beyond anticipation and includes Turkish President Suleyman Demirel and several Ministers.

Students can participate in extra-curricular work and study activities at Istanbul Technical University. Students can participate in clubs like Cinema Club, Rock Club, EPGIK, Model United Nation and International Engineering Club.

The suburban campus of ITU in Maslak has a Center of Sports. This centre has many sports facilities, including the Ayazağa Gymnasium, a stadium for volleyball and basketball with a seating capacity of 3500 and a fitness centre. Other sports facilities in ITU are diving, badminton, winter sports, fencing, tennis, gymnastics and dancing, aikido, paintball, mountaineering, athletics, cycling, swimming, wrestling, korfball and ultimate sailing and frisbee. ITU Stadium is a popular and favourite location for concerts and performances in Istanbul. Technical University Radio, also known as Radio ITU, is Turkey's first university radio station.


Most of the students applying for universities look for on-campus accommodations. The University has five campuses and offers residence to the students. But you should apply early if you want to have a better chance at securing a seat. Furthermore, if you cannot follow the strict regulation at dorms, you should look for an off-campus residence.
