Kyoto University is considered one of Asia’s most accomplished research universities. Founded upon the principle of “freedom of academic culture”, Kyoto University is currently comprised of three campuses with 10 Faculties, 18 Graduate Schools, 13 Research Institutes, and 22 Research and Educational Centers. The library at the University boasts over 7 million volumes. This library is the second-largest academic library in Japan. Furthermore, this University was one of the first three Designated National Universities and is classified by the Japanese government in the Top Global University Project as a Top Type university.

The University states its mission to develop and sustain its historical devotion to academic freedom and harmonious coexistence within this planet's ecological and human community. As an international institute, this University promotes foreign exchange and strives for the well-being of society and the world.

Students

Kyoto has a total student population of 22,700 students, of 13,400 undergraduates. The University organizes various events and activities that offer opportunities for exposure to Japanese culture, music, entertainment, and literacy development. Kyoto University has many events on its academic calendar. Annually, a concert is held in June to celebrate the anniversary of the foundation of the University. This concert has performances of the famous musician in the country.

The Campus Members System at Kyoto University is designed to provide opportunities for students to, where student observe the history and culture of Japan in cooperation with galleries and museums in Kyoto and surrounding areas.

Accommodation

The University has a housing facility available for international researchers and students, located in Yoshida, Shugakuin, Okazaki, Hyakumanben (for students only), Ohbaku, Okazaki, and Uji areas of Kyoto. Due to the minimal living spaces at these residences, most Kyoto University international students reside in non-university housing, such as privately managed apartments.

There are various off-campus housing facilities for international students provided by external agencies with which the University has leasing agreements. Such facilities are also occupied by students from other universities. Most international students find private rental spaces through other real state agencies.
