McMaster University

About

Established in 1890, McMaster is among the world’s leading research institutes. It was initially based in Toronto and was moved to Hamilton, Ontario, in 1930.

Spread over four campuses, the university offers degrees on undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. These degrees are offered in more than 100 programs across six faculties, including Humanities, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Science, Engineering and Business.

The institution is home to more than sixty research centres and institutes, some of which include the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, the McMaster eBusiness Research Centre, and the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis. Additionally, the institution operates its nuclear reactor, which is used in various scientific endeavours.

Students

McMaster University is home to about 28,000 undergraduate and 5,000 postgraduate students.

During the 2016–2017 academic year, the institution enrolled 31,625 students, including 26,780 undergraduates and 4,445 graduate students. 90.27 per cent of the student body consists of Canadians. International students comprised 9.73 per cent of the total student population. These students belong to around 75 different countries.

About 93.8% of the student population consists of full-time students. The institution has a first-year student retention rate of 90.9% among full-time students.

Accommodations

McMaster University offers residences to about 4,000 students, but most rooms are double. So, the students will have to share the space. Although the university tries to provide them with a compatible roommate, students are also given a choice to request someone as their roomie.

If the students are not comfortable living on-campus, they can always switch to an off-campus residence. However, they should know that the university has strict Covid-19 restrictions, and the students are required to abide by them.

There is student housing administered by the university, with alternatives such as all-female communities, healthy active living communities, and global views communities.

Residences feature standard room-and-board accommodations, furnished apartments, and suites.

The IRC (Inter-Resident Council) works to advocate for residence students on topics like facilities, meals, the environment, and more. Also, to allow residence students to develop significant leadership experience. They are a fundamental component of the McMaster residential community.
