Nanyang Polytechnic

About

Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) was established on 1 April 1992. It is a post-secondary education institution and a statutory board under the purview of the Ministry of Education in Singapore. Their first batch of students was enrolled in its School of Health Sciences and Business Management in July 1992. The School of Engineering and Information Technology were opened in July 1993.

As an industry-oriented alternative to a broader-based junior college education, polytechnic graduates in Singapore are sought after for work.

In contrast to polytechnics in the United States and the United Kingdom, polytechnics in Singapore admit the majority of its students after secondary school, which is after ten years of formal education.

Six academic schools of Nanyang Polytechnic provide a range of courses.

  • School of Design & Media (SDM)
  • School of Health & Social Sciences (SHSS)
  • School of Applied Science (SAS)
  • School of Engineering (SEG)
  • School of Information Technology (SIT)
  • School of Business Management (SBM)

Students

Being a full-time student at NYP has several benefits, one of which is the abundance of scholarships you are automatically qualified for. These scholarships, which are provided by NYP and their partners, honor students who have excelled in their academics, exhibited leadership potential, and actively participated in CCAs.

There are more than 80 extracurricular clubs at Nanyang Polytechnic, including ones for leadership, community service, sports & adventure, and the arts. Additionally, it features academic groups and a Students' Union.

NYP has many students who have achieved successes on both a national and international level. Some accolades include:

  • 2013 – WorldSkills Leipzig (2 golds, 3 medallion for excellence)
  • 2012 – Federation of International Robot-soccer Association RoboWorld Cup (7 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze, world record for 6-metre sprint)
  • 2012 – Champions at SLA Spatial Challenge 2012

Accommodation

Since they do not provide hostel accommodation, you’ll need to make your own housing arrangements. You have the option of renting a HDB flat, a condominium apartment or a room in a flat or private house, depending on your budget. Due to relative affordability, HDB flats are where the majority of overseas students stay. The owners of HDB apartments frequently rent out rooms to international students.
