ABOUT

Shanghai Jiao Tong University was first established in 1896 and is among the oldest universities in China. Before it separated from its predecessor, National Chiao Tong University, in 1930, the University was considered the Eastern MIT. Focused on nine major departments, including economics, literature, agriculture, medicine, etc., the institute offers Undergraduate level studies in about 65 programs, 250 master's programs and 203 PhD. Programs and 32 postdoc programs.

Students from the institute have secured top positions in several contests like the ACM International Collegiate Programming competition. SJTU has created many firsts in the Modern History of China, such as the first Chinese typewriter, IC engine and motor, the first nuclear-powered submarine, the first 10,000-ton ship, and the first orthotropic liver transplant.

STUDENTS

SJTU is considered a home for about 40,000 students. Most of the students are Chinese nationals, but there are also many international students. The University hosts about 4 to 5 thousand international students from different parts of the world.

There are many student associations and organizations at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, such as Student Union, Student Science Technology and Innovation Association, Graduate Student Union, Miyuan Youth Volunteer Team and many other clubs.

Annually, Shanghai Jiao Tong University organizes Freshman Cup. This allows new students to enhance friendships with their classmates and quickly integrate into college life. The Freshman Cup contains various sports such as badminton, basketball, football, table tennis etc.

Located in the city's centre, Shanghai Jiao Tong University benefits from the diversity in this megacity of China, with a population of 20 million. This city is a vibrant centre of commerce and business. It has a stunning skyline, historical landmarks, elevated highways, and colonial villas reminding Shanghai's rich and colourful past.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The institute facilitates its students, especially international ones, regarding the accommodations. There are about four main hostel buildings to offer the kind of residence you prefer. You may choose single or double rooms according to your preferences. Furthermore, the process of application is online, and you better not delay.

University has dedicated buildings for international students. In Minhang Campus, Nanyang Bei Yuan and No. 8/9 Building is reserved housing for international students. In Xuhui Campus, dedicated housing is in Lianxing Building. All residences here are equipped with all basic facilities like separate bathrooms, furniture and internet access.
