The Institution of Notre Dame du Lac (ND), also known as Notre Dame, is a private Catholic research university. It is located west of South Bend, Indiana. The institution was founded in 1842 by French priest Edward Sorin. 

The Golden Dome, the Word of Life mural (also known as Touchdown Jesus), Notre Dame Stadium, and the Basilica are all located on the main campus. 

There are seven schools and colleges at the institution. The graduate programme at Notre Dame offers more than 50 master's, doctoral, and professional degrees through its six institutions, including MD-PhD programmes in collaboration with the  Indiana University School of Medicine and the Notre Dame Law School. Overall, the University of Notre Dame have an academic staff of 1,396. 

State governors, US Congressmen, and former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are among the notable alums involved in politics. Eric F. Wieschaus, recipient of the 1995  Nobel Prize in medicine, and Philip Majerus, who discovered aspirin's cardioprotective properties, are notable graduates of the College of Science.

Students

Notre Dame's total students are 12,681. Out of this, 8,731 are undergraduates, and 3,950 are postgraduate students. 

The University of Notre Dame has 590 undergraduate international students out of 1,503 on campus. According to Notre Dame, around 11.9% of the student body is international.

A small percentage of overseas applicants who are granted admission as incoming freshmen and exhibit extraordinary achievement and intellectual potential are offered highly selective merit scholarships by Notre Dame.

Accommodation

Most of the university's undergraduates live on campus in one of 32 residence halls, each with its traditions, legacies, events, and intramural sports teams.

To support graduate students' quality of life beyond the classroom and provide summer visitors with living options, they provide a variety of housing options.

Summer housing is also available. It hosts over 10,000 students and visitors in residence halls during the summer.
