University of Southern California

ABOUT

The University of Southern California is the oldest and leading private research university in Los Angeles, which was established in 1880 by Robert M. Widney. Also, it is located in the middle of one of the most lively and diverse cities in the world. This university is known as a global centre for technology, arts, and international business.

Initially, USC opened its doors to 53 students and 10 teachers in 1880, when the recently founded city still lacked paved streets, electric lights, telephones and a valid fire alarm system. Now, it has thousands of students and faculty.

USC’s multiple curricular offerings provide wide opportunities for interdisciplinary study and also collaboration with leading researchers in greatly advanced learning environments. UCS has other campuses in Los Angeles.

The main mission of the University of Southern California is “the development of human beings and society, as a whole through the cultivation and enrichment of the human mind and spirit”.

Some of the major programs offered for undergraduates at UCS are:

  •     Social Sciences
  •     Arts and Humanities
  •     Natural Sciences
  •     Engineering, Computer, Quantitative, and Technical Sciences
  •     Natural Sciences

At USC, there are about 190 minor programs to choose from. There are overall three different types of minors at USC:

  • The mini-major: these minors are just a scaled-down kind of the major in the same subject.
  • The interdisciplinary minor: these minors combine coursework from various departments to give insight into the intersection of multiple disciplines in a particular field of study.
  • The special topic: these minors explore a specific topic in research, business, culture, leadership, or the arts that is consequential in today’s society.

STUDENTS

USC is home to about 49,500 students and 4,700 full-time faculty. The university gives admission to 19,500 undergraduate students and 26,500 graduate and professional students. It has a student-faculty ratio of 8:1.

The University of Southern California is an international institute where students from all over the world come here to study. Every year they admit candidates from nearly 80 countries. 23.8% of USC’s population is usually comprised of international students.

The number of students who are the first ones in their families to attend USC has been growing rapidly for five years.

There is no particular formula for getting admission here. Candidates with vastly different credentials may apply here. What unifies the perfect student here is merit, talent and pure passion for learning what the university has to offer.

ACCOMMODATION

Students have on-campus accommodation available. To experience USC’s full life, students should visit on-campus housing located in the heart of the institute. And from a short walk, students can access classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and sports facilities.

Studies and surveys show that students living on campus perform much better academically. As a part of a diverse community of over 19,000 undergraduates, you have many opportunities to interact and connect with others for your academic and personal growth.

University's on-campus housing is available in the summers only; therefore, most international students arrange their living off-campus. Thus, various private organizations provide residence halls and furnished apartments so that students can avail accommodation.
