Citizenship through Residency Italy

About

The number of years of lawful residence in Italy is used to determine citizenship through residency. Legal residency in Italy for at least ten years is required for non-EU citizens. On the other hand, the residency requirement for EU citizens is four years.

But in some cases, such as for immigrants whose parents or grandparents were born in Italy, a shorter residency period is necessary. In this instance, three years of legal residency is required; the same is true for those born in Italy but non-Italian nationals.

Eligibility

This sort of citizenship application is designed for foreign people who have lived in Italy legally for an extended period. Depending on the circumstance, a different amount of time may be required. There are five significant circumstances to consider in particular:

  • A foreign individual with at least one parent or grandparent who is or was Italian by birth is eligible for a three-year legal and continuous residency in Italy.
  • EU residents are required to stay in Italy for four years legally and continuously.
  • Adult foreign citizens adopted by an Italian citizen must remain in Italy for five years legally and constantly. Stateless people are subject to the same time constraints.
