A Temporary Resident Visa is available to foreign citizens and their dependents who seek to settle in Mexico. Scientific Research, Real Estate Investment, Education and Marriage are only some of the categories covered by this visa.
A resident may be eligible for citizenship after five years of legal residency. They should have Spanish language ability and pass an exam and interview regarding Mexican history, culture, and values in order to get citizenship. After two years of legal presence, nationals of Iberia or Latin American countries might well be eligible for citizenship.

Duration
The Temporary Resident Visa is only valid for 180 days. This is why, within 30 days after arriving in Mexico, you must apply for a Temporary Resident Card, which is valid for a year.
Fees
The Temporary Resident Visa costs about 4,000 MXN (Apx. 200 USD) for one year. Moreover, the price may increase with the duration of stay.
On the first issuance, the Temporary Resident Card is eligible for one year and can be re-issued for another one to three years. A Temporary Resident card extension or renewal application must be submitted to the National Institute of Immigration within 30 days of the card's expiration date.
