An entry and employment visa for Russia is known as a Russian work visa. It is given to people who have previously secured employment in Russia. A work visa is by far the most complicated and costly visa type required for foreign citizens working in Russia.

Those applying for a work permit in Russia have two options,

Single-entry Visa
The duration of this visa is 90 days. Based on a work permit invitation, which employees receive once they obtain a work permit, the Russian Consulate will provide it.

Multiple-entry Visa
Depending on how long the work permit is valid, the regional office of the Russian Migration police will reissue the multiple-entry visa.

Eligibility

The requirements for obtaining a work visa in Russia are as follows:

  • A Russian employer must have made you an employment offer.
  • A work permit must be acquired on your behalf by your employer.
  • You must be completely free of any criminal history and not pose a security risk to the country.

Documents

The following papers are needed to apply for a work visa in Russia:

  • A passport that is up to date, valid for at least six months past the duration of your intended stay in Russia, and has at least two blank pages.
  • A finalized visa application.
  • A letter of invitation from the Russian employer outlining the position, compensation, and length of the stay.
  • An employment permit from the Russian Ministry of Interior Affairs.
  • Proof of ongoing medical insurance that is valid in Russia.
  • A document from your country of origin attesting to your lack of criminal history.
  • A medical document attesting to your lack of infectious diseases.
  • A copy of your credentials, both academic and professional.

Process

A foreign national must wait for a job invitation from a specific employer before applying for a work visa to Russia. Consequently, a foreign worker must first locate an employer and consent to the working circumstances. 

Visa Processing Time
An application for a Russian visa typically takes 10 days to process. The processing time mostly ranges from 7 to 20 working days. For fast processing, which takes three working days, those in a rush can apply. 

How to Apply
If you are applying for a work permit in Russia, you must:

  • Gather the required paperwork
  • Send paperwork and an application to the Russian embassy abroad.
  • A work visa may take up to 20 working days, so be patient.
  • You may have to attend the visa interview, so be prepared.

Duration & Fees

Duration
The length is determined by the type of visa you are requesting. Work visas with one or two entries can be obtained for up to 90 days. Work visas with multiple entries are granted for up to three years, as stated in the invitation.
