Controversy Surrounds Biden Administration's Entry of 57,000 Mexicans Under 'Humanitarian Protection'

United States

The Biden administration's secretive CBP One smartphone app scheme, which has allowed more than 57,000 Mexican nationals to enter the US, has raised questions and sparked speculation.

Initially presented as a way to manage the entry of persecuted individuals from countries like Venezuela and Haiti, it has raised eyebrows as Mexico is not traditionally considered a source of persecuted asylum-seekers.

Experts have wondered whether this is an unauthorized expansion of US asylum law or a de facto guestworker program, with potentially significant consequences for US labor markets. The administration has not provided a clear explanation for this influx.

Canada

#decline

As of October 31, IRCC’s backlog decreased to 1,056,100 applications, a 3.73% drop from September. Total applications in inventory also reduced to 2,406,000, with 1,349,900 processed within service standards.

For permanent residents, 63% of applications met service standards, though Express Entry and PNP backlogs increased slightly. Temporary residence applications saw improvements, with study permit and work permit backlogs dropping to 33% and 46%, respectively. Citizenship applications remained steady at a 17% backlog.

IRCC’s efforts to reduce backlogs include setting lower immigration targets, using online portals, conducting virtual citizenship ceremonies, and streamlining judicial review for study permit rejections, which has significantly reduced wait times.

UK Residents Must Transition to eVisas Before Year-End

United Kingdom

#evisa

#biometric

The UK Home Office is transitioning from physical immigration documents to eVisas, which is a digital proof of immigration status. This shift replaces Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and visa vignettes with a streamlined digital system.

The change affects non-UK and Irish nationals with visas valid beyond December 31, 2024, as BRP cards will no longer be valid after this date. eVisas simplifies verification for work, housing, and study purposes.

Individuals must review their immigration status and complete any necessary steps before the year ends. Visit the Home Office’s information page to understand how this transition impacts you and ensure compliance with the new system.
