Starting January 1, 2025, Surinamese-born individuals who lost their Dutch citizenship and have lived in the Netherlands within the past decade can apply for residence permits in Amsterdam.

This decision, part of a temporary arrangement lasting until July 1, 2025, seeks to correct a "historic mistake" following Suriname's independence in 1975. Many affected individuals, unable to work or receive social benefits, are now eligible.

Applications will be processed through the Amsterdam Solidarity Committee for Refugees (ASKV), with decisions expected within four weeks. The arrangement aims to improve conditions for about 950 to 1,250 undocumented Surinamese in Amsterdam.

New Zealand Considers Immigration Changes for Healthcare Workers

New Zealand

New Zealand’s government is reviewing immigration policies to address healthcare workforce needs. Currently, the ‘green list’ fast-tracks skilled workers for residency, but nurses were initially excluded from the immediate pathway in early 2022, later being added.

Health Minister Shane Reti is seeking advice on improving immigration settings for domestic and international health staff. While recruitment has been higher than anticipated, with 3,000 more nurses hired than expected, concerns remain over job shortages for international nurses.

India and the Philippines have warned their nurses not to come to New Zealand without a guaranteed job amidst ongoing staffing issues.
