Columbia University is a private institution that was founded in 1754. It is located in the  New York City's Upper West Side in Manhattan borough. Originally called King's College, the school received its current name in 1896. The university comprises three schools that enrol undergraduates – the Fu Foundation School of Applied Science and Engineering, Columbia College and the School of General Studies – and numerous graduate and professional schools. This university is an American private Ivy League research institution. It is the country's fifth oldest institute of higher learning in New York State. Columbia University is also among the 9 Colonial Colleges created before the American Revolution. Today the university has overseas Columbia Global Centers in Paris, Amman, Istanbul, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Nairobi and Santiago.

This university is one of the world's most important centres of research. Because of its important location in New York City, it seeks to link its teaching and research to the vast resources of a great metropolis. Columbia University also seeks to attract a diverse student body and international faculty. To support teaching and research on global issues.


Columbia University's student population is 31,455. Around 30 per cent of students at Columbia study at the undergraduate level, and almost 30 per cent of the total student body is international. The university is home to many sororities, fraternities, and co-educational Greek associations. Around 10-15% of undergraduate students are associated with these associations and Greek life. Columbia Daily Spectator is the university's daily newspaper. The university is also home to two pioneers in undergraduate campus radio broadcasting, CTV and WKCR-FM.

It is a member of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The Baker Athletic Complex of Columbia University offers various sports, including facilities for softball, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, field hockey, rowing and track. The New Campbell Sports Center opened recently and offers facilities for swimming and diving, fencing, volleyball, basketball and various wrestling programs.


Columbia Housing provides undergraduate residential students with safe and comfortable accommodations. More than 90 per cent of undergraduate students live on campus, and there is some university housing available for graduate students as well.
