National Taiwan University

National Taiwan University, or NTU, is a national university located in Taipei. It was founded in 1928 as a Japanese Imperial University. The institute is generally considered to be the best in Taiwan.

It has an endowment of around $566 million. It is comprised of 11 colleges. There are 56 departments, 133 graduate institutes and over 60 research centres. As a leader in several categories, its medical school is considered one of the best in Asia.

The university offers over 8000 courses across its colleges. One of the most notable establishments is the International Chinese Language Program (ICLP) which Stanford University founded.

There is a total of 2,029 academic staff. It also has a long list of notable alumni, including the current and several former presidents of the Republic of China, a Turing Award laureate and a Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate.

Furthermore, this university is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, McDonnell International Scholars Academy and the Association of East Asian Research Universities.

The university has around 32,974 students across all faculties. 16,773 of these are undergraduates, 12,533 are postgraduates and 3,668 are doctoral students.

The university has around 400 extracurricular clubs divided into eight major categories; physical training, service, social development, entertainment, academic, arts, autonomy and composite. The Student Activity Division manages the clubs.

Undergraduate students must complete a compulsory core curriculum to graduate, which includes Chinese, freshman English, physical education and public service.

There are 26 dormitories on campus which can house around 8,500 students. Most housing centres are divided into male and female-only dorms.

There are 2,200 rooms for graduate students and 6,600 spaces for those enrolled in undergraduate courses. Most rooms house four students simultaneously, with certain rooms for two people.

The dormitories have basic furniture and facilities such as internet, telephones, vending machines, air conditioners and washing machines. There are also study lounges, reading rooms and television rooms. All necessary precautions have also been taken to ensure student safety.

Most dorms also have cafeterias, and convenience stores on campus have all basic necessities.

Besides that, the university has also started a renovation project for old dormitories and arranged the construction of new residential housing. The latest additions are expected to accommodate an additional 3,500 bed spaces.
