Stanford University, located in California's Bay Area, was created in 1885. Around half of the student community studies at the graduate level. At the university, 7 schools comprise all educational activities. Three of these schools offer both graduate and undergraduate degrees: earth sciences, engineering, and humanities and sciences. The medical schools, education, business and law offer only graduate-level degrees. The university's academic calendar is centred on a quarter system.

Students

Around 8 % of Stanford's undergraduate students are international, as is about 30% of the graduate student population. The total student population of Stanford University is 16,914.

Office of Student Engagement supervises more than 600 student associations at the university. These organizations plan and arrange around 1,500 events yearly. At Stanford University, there are around 30 recognized religious organizations and more than 100 associations dedicated to the arts. Several other types of organizations include cultural/ethnic, social awareness, community service, recreational and social athletic, and pre-professional/academic organizations.

The Club Sports Program of Stanford University brings together 42 sports and more than 1,900 student-athletes to create an environment that fosters leadership and student development through sports. Sports under this Club Sports Program include Aikido, Alpine, Archery, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Climbing, Cycling, Dragon Boat, Equestrian, Figure Skating, Fly Fishing and Tying, Golf, Horse Polo, Ice Hockey, JKA Shotokan and many more sports.

Accommodation

Around 7,312 students live in Stanford's Undergraduate housing, and there is separate housing for graduate students where 6,543 students live. Stanford University guarantees accommodation to all first-year undergraduate students for four years. The housing system in the university includes 80 diverse facilities. There are separate on-campus houses for Greek-letter organizations. Graduate students are eligible for spaces designed for couples, families, and single students. New graduate students are guaranteed housing at the university in their first year only.
