ABOUT

The University of Geneva is a state university of the Geneva Canton. It was founded by John Calvin in 1559. UNIGE is affiliated with the Coimbra group and LERU (League of European Research Universities). Today this institute ranks among the top 100 universities in the world. It is a versatile institution that cultivates and promotes emergence in multidisciplinary fields in teaching and research.

UNIGE has nine faculties and 13 interfaculty centres where different programs are offered. The faculties are:

  • Psychology and Educational Sciences
  • Translation and Interpreting

University is spread over several districts. Lecturers and students are given six different central locations. The nearby campus is in the city of Carouge. And different buildings are sometimes very distant from each other (the Battelle buildings are, for instance, more than three kilometres away from the Bastions). And locations are Les Bastions, Sciences I, II and III, Uni Dufour, Uni Pignon, Uni Mail and Centre Médical Universitaire (CMU), and Battelle.

STUDENT

Institute invites students from the second year to the doctoral level to study in one of nine faculties. This is the third-largest university in Switzerland. Institute has a strength of 17,300 students from 150 different countries.

Academic support is also available for students. If a student faces any problem in their studies, health or exams, they are there to help them.

Institute highly encourages students who wish to pursue their sporting careers. The Bureau des sports is a sports facility in the UNIGE. They organize all sports-related activities. Free sports lessons are given every day. University is home to Geneva university championships. They also send a team of both indoor and outdoor games to the Swiss University Championship.

ACCOMMODATION

The University of Geneva takes exceptional care of its international students, as you receive a letter of acceptance from the university. Institute will provide links and information to apply for online accommodation. But this will not guarantee you a room. They offer different options. Such as an Individual bedroom with a communal kitchen and bathroom facility. Or individual bedrooms in shared apartments for 2 to 7 people. Instead of studio apartments totalling 675 beds.

RANKING

By looking at its previous ranking, the university has gone below the chart due to several factors. From 1999 to 2009, it was ranked 4th, just behind Oxford in research work. Several rankings of the institute are given below.

  • In Times Higher Education, according to an academic ranking of world universities (Shanghai-Ranking), it is ranked 201-300th.
  • According to U.S News & World Report Best Universities Rankings, it was ranked 101st.
  • Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) ranks it 60th.
  • By QS world university ranking, it is placed in 101 position.
