USI - Universita della Svizzera italiana

ABOUT

USI - Universita Della Svizzera Italiana is a young institute established in 1996. It is one of the 12 certified public universities in Switzerland. This university is on the way to constant evolution and is always ready to take on new challenges. They remain true to their three guiding principles: openness, quality and responsibility.

USI is organized into the following five faculties.

  • Academy of Architecture
  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Communication, Culture and Society
  • Economics
  • Faculty of Informatics

University is active in several research areas, among which are health studies, humanities, law, informatics, data science, economics, biomedicine, computational science, communication sciences and architecture.

It has four campuses which are located in Lugano, Bellinzona, and Mendrisio. These are relatively small campuses.

STUDENTS

Institute has a strength of 3,350 students who hail from over 100 countries. And about 1000 researchers and professors are foreigners. The university is known for being a very global institution. It offers a wide range of opportunities around the world.

They encourage students, faculty, and researchers to develop their own potential. And appreciate their willingness to experiment with a new way of thinking, working, teaching, and learning. Small-sized classes enable direct interaction with faculty, which helps to discover unexpected realities.

In Bachelor’s Programmes, classes are mainly taught in Italian. And most Master’s and Doctoral programs and executive education classes are taught in English.

ACCOMMODATION

Universita della Svizzera italiana has two student residences (Casa dell’Accademia on the Mendrisio campus and USI Home on the Lugano campus). These are reserved for exchange students and international students on specific scholarships. Also, the French-Swiss or German-Swiss students who are enrolled in the first year of Bachelor in Architecture are also accommodated.

Other than that, USI doesn’t accommodate students. However, on universities’ info desk, housing services have developed a portal where private property owners and agents can take advantage by posting their ads directly on the housing portal through their website.

The housing services also manage a Facebook page (Mendrisio housing) to encourage direct contact among students where students can circulate information regarding available accommodations.
