Tongji University


Tongji University is one of the country's most reputed and oldest institutes. In 1927, it was given its current title, becoming a state university.

Among various departments of the University, engineering is highly ranked. It is now a complete institution with strength in architecture, civil engineering, and oceanography and seven departments in engineering, medicine, science, management, law, arts and economics. The University has been a welcoming host for about 19,000 Undergraduate and 14,000 Graduate students. These students include about 2,000 international students from different countries.

Tongji University has diverse student clubs and organizations. Famous student clubs are Apple Club and Google Club. In 2003, Apple established its first student club in collaboration with students of the Asia-pacific region. This club's purpose was to spread the company's advanced technology and promote students' innovation consciousness. Google funds Google Club. In this club, students can participate in global competitions such as  ACM/ICPC, Android Development Competition, Microsoft Imagine Club, and Top Coder.

Societies and Clubs of Arts are also very active at Tongji University. Several clubs like the Chinese Musical Instrument Club, Golden Flute Art Club, Dongli Drama Club and C4Family Street Dance Society have many students.

Established in 2004, the Tongji Astronomical Society has many amateur astronomical students interested in revealing the secrets of the universe. Members of this society conduct field observations in Shanghai and Chongming Island and share experiences with students at other universities.


University has an on-campus hostel for international students, and the dormitory facility is run like a hotel. There are two hostel complexes dedicated to international students. If an overseas student chooses a double room, the roommate may be allocated by the University or picked by the student after arriving at University. Male and female guests are accommodated separately. There are certain rules and procedures for housing that students should read carefully and follow once they are at University.

International dormitories meet various needs of students of different programs. These residences are available for exchange students, Master's and bachelor's students, scholarship students and students who take 1-year language program.
