The University of Helsinki is the oldest public research centre in Finland. This university was established as the Royal Academy of Abo in 1640. It got formal recognition as a university in 1829. Furthermore, the University is spread over 11 faculties and research institutes. Its total academic staff is 4,717.
There are four primary campuses for the university. These include the Viikki Campus, City Center Campus, Kumpula Campus, and Meilahti Campus.
The University of Helsinki offers studies in Swedish and Finnish. Although Swedish is a common tongue at the University, Finnish is more influential as it is an official language. English is also used for teaching students.
The University is ranked among the top interdisciplinary research universities in the world and among the top research universities in Europe. Due to its affiliation with the League of European Research Universities (LERU).
Notable alums of the University of Helsinki include three Nobel laureates. Pioneer in optimal design of experiments, Gustav Elfving. Astronomer Hugo Gyldén, seven presidents of Finland, five prime ministers, Nils Kock (developer of Kock pouch procedure for ileostomits), Linus Torvalds (developer of Linux kernel), Klaus Suomela (gymnastics and dramatic arts), Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis (Minister for Foreign Affairs for Cyprus) and many more.
Approximately, there is a total number of 31,600 students, both national and international. These students included 16,000 undergraduate, 10,000 postgraduate and 5,000 doctoral students.
It is home to a sizable international student community. Of these, about 8,000 of them study in this university.
International exchange programs offered by the institution are open to both students and faculty.
The University does not offer on-campus accommodations, nor does it provide pick and drop. It works in cooperation with Unihome and HOAS to ensure you have the best chance to avail yourself of a residence. Moreover, you are not promised residence, but the administration will do its best to facilitate you.
