The university was formed back in 1989, so it has years of experience in delivering high-quality education under its belt.

The university has 11 research centres and institutes. The Hawkesbury Institute was opened in 2012 with the funding of 40 million from the Australian Government under the Education Investment Fund. This institute is home to the most complex centres in the world for research on the effects of climate change. Center for the Study for Contemporary Muslim Studies grew into the Religion and Society Research Cluster. It mainly focuses on religion, post-secularism and multi-culturalism.

Students

Western Sydney University has a total student body of over 41,000. WSU is a prestigious university in terms of research as it houses over 700 PhD candidates. These are researchers who are pursuing applied research in their respective fields.

Student Representative Council (SRC) is the only representative body for all students in the university. The main objective of this student council is to solve all student issues and represent the student in the university's decision-making. This council has 22 elected representatives on various campuses of Western Sydney University.

To support Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal students university has developed the Badanami Center for Indigenous Education. On each campus, this centre is staffed by people to share their experiences and knowledge of life with Indigenous students.

Connect Fitness is a non-profit organization located in Western Sydney University's 4 campuses with operational gyms in Hawkesbury, Kingswood, Campbeltown, and Bankstown.

WSUPnews, established in 2013, is the student newspaper of the university. Previously it was known as cruWsible.

Accommodation

Western Sydney University offers a variety of housing options, providing students with high-quality, reasonably priced accommodation that gives a balanced learning and living environment. All of their residences are fully furnished and self-catered with a great range of housing options and 24-hour support on Campbelltown, Bankstown, Nirimba, Hawkesbury, Penrith and Parramatta campuses. It has on-campus housing in the form of UWS villages adjacent to its campuses.
